On OwnVoices

As a mixed-race queer person, OwnVoices is something that I fervently advocate for. The stories that people tell are a manifestation of their own memories, perception, feelings, ideas, and values. In other words you can tell a lot about a person based on the stories that they tell. However, there’s a component to it that I think a lot of people fail to recognize, or frankly, don’t want to recognize out of the comfort of consuming readily available material. And that is: does this person have the authority to tell this story? and if so, should they?
