Queering the Apocalypse

The idea of living in a post-apocalyptic world sounds terrifying to most people. The collapse of society, being constantly on the run from danger, and basic necessities like food and clean water becoming scarce. But what does this sub-genre reveal about queerness? Until recently, depictions of the apocalypse in the media rarely included queer people, (or any resemblance of queerness for that matter). Mostly, the plots of these stories centered around a heroic cis-hetero man ‘manning up’ to save his family from the harshness of the world. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, (other than the narrative being quite tired at this point) but rarely are there any discussions on not only what it’s like to be queer during the apocalypse, but more importantly, the parallels that can be drawn between the post-apocalyptic world and being queer in the world in which we live.

Being queer comes with a lot of danger. Queer
